Being A Real Kid.
The B.A.R.K. program's mission is to offer an outdoor educational program centered on embracing the magic of being a real kid. With openness to organic learning and curiosity-driven exploration, we create an environment where children thrive while staying connected to nature, themselves, and each other. At the heart of what we do is the belief that connection and relationships lay the foundation for meaningful learning. Through experiential activities like building forts, tracking animal foot prints, or simply lying on the ground staring at the clouds we create space for discovery.
We lean into the preservation of childhood by honoring kids natural instinct to play, imagine and explore.
This program is a non-traditional, nature-based hybrid program based in Tucker, Georgia is available to families and their children between the ages of 5-13. This program is designed to create a community for children that are homeschooled or unschooled. Children are encouraged to connect with each other and the natural world around us in intentional ways.
Individualized Education is not just a buzz word we use. It is how we DO SCHOOL. By using formal and informal assessments, the facilitators create a curriculum catered to your child's unique needs and goals. The process gives ownership to the student and encourages perseverance.
Connection and Relationships are at the foundation of our program. We are purposeful about getting to know each student and their family. When students feel safe, loved, valued, and respected they will be comfortable to make mistakes and learn from them. Together, with parents, we help create a true village for our children.
Our curriculum is based on the interests of each individual student and the interests of the community of students as a whole. We intentionally create space for organic learning experiences to happen. Students and staff are able to discover a JOY for learning among the enchanting natural setting.
In the Elementary Cohort, students select study topics and receive guidance throughout the research process, culminating in final projects that they present to their families and the B.A.R.K. community each season. The process begins with research, followed by organizing the information, drafting written pieces, and ultimately creating a final project tailored to each child's skills and abilities. This approach allows students to become authorities on their chosen subjects and build confidence in their academic pursuits. Additionally, a Middle School Cohort is scheduled to launch for the 2024/25 academic year. This Cohort will offer a more rigorous work cycle, designed with a deliberately structured flow.
Parents will receive reports on growth - academic and social. Communication is extremely important in our effort to help each student succeed. As a team, we will work closely with your family to ensure growth and a joyful educational experience.
Immersion in outdoor classrooms inspires students to understand and connect with the world around them using all five senses. We encourage curiosity, play, problem-solving, intrinsic motivation, and connection to the world around us. The program runs mostly outdoors, with the exception of the winter months. We start indoors in colder months, but normally end outdoors. We dress for the weather and LOVE rain days. Our children come home messy and happy!
Experiential Education makes learning real. Whether it is hatching chicken eggs in an incubator, planning and making a pollinator garden, cooking together, or launching a community service project, the students of B.A.R.K. will always be working on something that engages all of their senses.
